Chatra–Upānah Dāna: Origin Narrative
Jamadagni–Reṇukā–Sūrya Saṃvāda
शुक्रोउज़िराश्वैव कविश्व विद्वां- स्तथा ह्ुगस्त्यो नारदपर्वतौ च | भगुर्वसिष्ठ: कश्यपो गौतमश्न विश्वामित्रो जमदग्निश्व राजन्
bhīṣma uvāca | śukro 'ṅgirāś caiva kaviś ca vidvān tathā hy agastyo nārada-parvatau ca | bhṛgur vasiṣṭhaḥ kaśyapo gautamaś ca viśvāmitro jamadagniś ca rājan | gālavaḥ aṣṭako bharadvājo 'rundhatī vālkhyilya-gaṇāḥ śibiḥ dilīpo nahuṣo 'mbarīṣaḥ yāyātiḥ rājā dhundhumāraḥ puruś ca | ete sarve rājarṣayaś ca brahmarṣayaś ca vajradharaṃ vṛtrahantaṃ śatakratum indram agrataḥ kṛtvā yātrārthaṃ niryayuḥ | sarva-tīrthāni paryaṭantaḥ māgha-māsa-pūrṇimāyāṃ puṇya-salilāyāḥ kauśikyā nadī-tīre samupajagmuḥ ||
Wika ni Bhishma: “O hari! Nang mapagtibay ang pasiya, sina Shukra, Angiras, ang marunong na pantas na si Kavi, si Agastya, sina Narada at Parvata, si Bhrigu, si Vasistha, si Kashyapa, si Gautama, si Vishvamitra, at si Jamadagni—kasama sina Galava, Ashtaka, Bharadvaja, Arundhati, ang pangkat ng mga Valakhilya, at ang mga rajarshi na sina Shibi, Dilipa, Nahusha, Ambarisha, Haring Yayati, Dhundhumara, at Puru—ay nagsilabas sa banal na paglalakbay. Inuna nila si Indra, tagapagdala ng vajra, pumatay kay Vritra, tagaganap ng sandaang yajña; at sa paglibot sa mga tirtha, sa kabilugan ng buwan ng Māgha ay narating nila ang pampang ng banal na Ilog Kaushiki.”
भीष्म उवाच
The verse highlights an ethical model: even the most accomplished sages and righteous kings undertake tīrtha-yātrā with firm resolve, seeking purification, merit, and the maintenance of dharmic order through disciplined travel, sacred bathing, and reverence for holy places.
Bhishma enumerates a large assembly of brahmarṣis and rājarṣis who set out together on pilgrimage, placing Indra at the forefront, visiting many tīrthas, and finally reaching the bank of the Kaushiki river on the auspicious full-moon day of Māgha.
