Regular self-study/recitation of sacred learning (svādhyāya) yields tangible benefits in this life—clarity, discipline, right conduct—and also leads to higher posthumous well-being, symbolized by joy in Brahmaloka.
In Anushasana Parva’s instruction on dharma, Bhishma continues advising Yudhishthira by praising svādhyāya: he states that its results are visible both in the present world and in the hereafter, and that the devoted dvija rejoices in both realms.
