Mataṅga–Śakra Dialogue on Tapas, Status, and Moral Qualities

शयानं वीरशयने कालाकाड्'क्षिणमच्युतम्‌ । आज ममुर्भरतश्रेष्ठ द्रष्टकामा महर्षय:

vaiśampāyana uvāca | śayānaṃ vīraśayane kālākāṅkṣiṇam acyutam | ājagmur bharataśreṣṭha draṣṭukāmā maharṣayaḥ ||

Sinabi ni Vaiśampāyana: O pinakamainam sa angkan ng Bharata, habang si Bhīṣma ay nakahimlay sa higaan ng bayani na yari sa mga palaso, matatag at di matinag, naghihintay sa itinakdang oras ng kamatayan, maraming dakilang ṛṣi—nagnanais siyang masilayan—ang dumating doon. Ipinapakita ng tagpong ito ang di-matitinag na pagpipigil-sa-sarili ni Bhīṣma sa gitna ng pagdurusa, at ang paggalang ng mga pantas sa isang buhay na inialay sa tungkulin.
