Aṣṭāvakra’s Visit to Kubera: Hospitality, Temptation, and the Ethics of Restraint (अष्टावक्र-वैश्रवणोपाख्यानम्)
वायुदेव उवाच उपमन्युर्मयि प्राह तपन्निव दिवाकर:
Vāyudeva uvāca: Upamanyur mayi prāha tapann iva divākaraḥ—“ye pāpakarmiṇaḥ manuṣyā aśubhācāraiḥ kaluṣitāḥ, te tamoguṇino vā rajoguṇino vā vṛttayaḥ santo bhagavataḥ Śivasya śaraṇaṃ na yānti.”
Sinabi ni Vāyudeva: O hari! Si Upamanyu, na nagliliyab sa tapás na gaya ng araw, ay minsang nagsabi sa akin: “Ang mga taong gumagawa ng kasalanan at nadungisan ng masamang asal—yaong ang likas ay pinaghaharian ng tamas o rajas—ay hindi kumakalinga sa Panginoong Śiva.” Ipinapakita ng pahayag na ang debosyon ay di-maihihiwalay sa paglilinis ng asal at kaliwanagan sa loob.
वायुदेव उवाच
Ethical conduct and inner purification are prerequisites for genuine refuge in Śiva: those stained by sinful actions and driven by tamas or rajas fail to turn toward divine shelter.
Vāyudeva reports a prior instruction from the ascetic Upamanyu—described as radiant like the sun—about why morally tainted, tamasic/rajasic people do not seek Śiva’s refuge.
