Praise of Ācāra as the Basis of Longevity, Fame, and Prosperity
वाग्यतो नैकवस्त्रश्ष नासंविष्ट: कदाचन । भूमौ सदैव नाश्नीयान्नानासीनो न शब्दवत्
Bhīṣma uvāca | vāgyato naikavastraś ca nāsaṁviṣṭaḥ kadācana | bhūmau sadaiva nāśnīyān nānāsīno na śabdavat ||
Wika ni Bhishma: “Sa oras ng pagkain, pigilin ang pananalita at manatiling tahimik. Huwag kumain na iisang kasuotan lamang ang suot, at huwag kailanman kumain nang nakahiga. Huwag kumain kung ang pagkain ay nakapatong sa hubad na lupa. Huwag kumain nang nakatayo, ni nakaupo sa di-wastong ayos, ni habang maingay o nakikipag-usap.”
भीष्म उवाच
The verse teaches disciplined, respectful conduct while eating: maintain silence, be properly clothed, sit properly, avoid reclining or standing, do not place food directly on the ground, and avoid noisy or talkative eating—treating food as a dharmic act requiring restraint and cleanliness.
In Anushasana Parva, Bhishma instructs Yudhishthira on dharma and proper conduct (ācāra). Here he gives practical rules of meal-time behavior as part of ethical self-regulation and purity in daily life.
