Āśramadharma and the Marks of the Muni
Yayāti–Aṣṭaka Saṃvāda
स राजा सिंहविक्रान्तो युवा विषयगोचर: । अविरोधेन धर्मस्य चचार सुखमुत्तमम्,वे राजा सिंहके समान पराक्रमी और नवयुवक थे। सम्पूर्ण विषय उनके अधीन थे और वे धर्मका विरोध न करते हुए उत्तम सुखका उपभोग करते थे
sa rājā siṁha-vikrānto yuvā viṣaya-gocaraḥ | avirodhena dharmasya cacāra sukham uttamam ||
Sinabi ni Vaiśampāyana: Ang haring iyon ay matapang na gaya ng leon at nasa kasiglahan pa ng kabataan. Nasa ilalim ng kanyang ganap na kapangyarihan ang buong kaharian. At kailanma’y hindi sumasalungat sa dharma, namuhay siya at tinamasa ang pinakamataas na kaginhawahan—kasaganahang nakaugat sa matuwid na asal, hindi sa paglabag.
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse links legitimate happiness (sukha) with non-opposition to dharma: a ruler’s prosperity is ethically grounded when his power and enjoyment remain within the bounds of righteous duty and do not violate moral order.
Vaiśampāyana describes a king at the height of youthful strength and lion-like valor, whose authority effectively encompasses the whole realm; he lives in excellent comfort while maintaining conduct that does not conflict with dharma.
