Yayāti–Devayānī Dialogue and Śukra’s Consent
वैशम्पायन उवाच कचस्तु त॑ तथेत्युक्त्वा प्रतिजग्राह तद् व्रतम् आदिटष्ट॑ कविपुत्रेण शुक्रेणोशनसा स्वयम्,वैशम्पायनजी कहते हैं--तब कचने “बहुत अच्छा” कहकर महाकान्तिमान् कविपुत्र शुक्राचार्यके आदेशके अनुसार स्वयं ब्रह्मचर्य व्रत ग्रहण किया
Vaiśampāyana uvāca: Kacaḥ tu tathā ity uktvā pratijagrāha tad vratam, ādiṣṭaḥ kaviputreṇa Śukreṇa Uśanasā svayam.
Sinabi ni Vaiśampāyana: Nang magkagayon, si Kaca, na nagsabing “Gayon nga,” ay tumanggap sa panatang brahmacarya—ang mahigpit na pagpipigil at kalinisan—ayon sa iniutos ni Śukra, si Uśanas mismo, anak ng pantas na makata.
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse highlights dharmic discipline in learning: a student should accept the teacher’s injunction with sincerity, and self-restraint (brahmacarya) is presented as an ethical prerequisite for receiving and safeguarding higher knowledge.
Kaca responds affirmatively (“tathā”) and formally undertakes the prescribed vow—identified in the accompanying tradition as brahmacarya—following the direct command of Śukra (also called Uśanas), as narrated by Vaiśampāyana.
