Adhyāya 129 — Public Acclaim of the Pāṇḍavas and Duryodhana’s Appeal to Dhṛtarāṣṭra
नच प्रीणयते चक्षु: सदा दुर्योधनस्य सः । क्रूरोडसौ दुर्मति: क्षुद्रो राज्यलुब्धोडनपत्रप:,“वह सदा दुर्योधनकी आँखोंमें खटकता रहता है। दुर्योधन क्रूर, दुर्बुद्धि, क्षुद्र, राज्यका लोभी तथा निर्लज्ज है
na ca prīṇayate cakṣuḥ sadā duryodhanasya saḥ | krūro ’sau durmatiḥ kṣudro rājya-lubdho ’napatrapaḥ ||
Sinabi ni Vaiśampāyana: “Hindi kailanman nakalulugod sa paningin ni Duryodhana ang taong iyon; lagi siyang tinik sa mata nito. Sapagkat si Duryodhana ay malupit, baluktot ang paghatol, makitid ang isip, sakim sa paghahari, at walang hiya—kaya hindi niya matiis ang makita ang sinumang humahadlang sa kanyang pagnanasa.”
वैशम्पायन उवाच
Unchecked desire for power (rājya-lobha) corrodes judgment and shame, producing cruelty and pettiness; such a person naturally resents anyone who obstructs his aims, revealing how adharma manifests as envy and hostility.
Vaiśampāyana characterizes Duryodhana’s disposition: someone (contextually, a rival or obstacle) is intolerable to Duryodhana’s sight, because Duryodhana’s nature is cruel, ill-advised, petty, power-greedy, and shameless.
