Concept: Shodhana (cleansing) as restoration of balance; removing obstruction to restore normal function.
Vedantic Theme: Removal of mala (impurities) as an analogy for inner purification; functional clarity follows elimination of blockage.
Application: Use mild purgatives judiciously; ensure hydration; avoid in pregnancy, frailty, or severe dehydration; seek supervision for therapeutic purgation.
Primary Rasa: shanta
Related Themes: Garuda Purana 1.193.9-12 (agni, shula, kasa, jvara leading into virecana)
This verse lists substances considered “virekakṛt” (purgative), indicating the text’s concern with cleansing and bodily regulation as supportive measures in rites and disciplined living.
Alongside narratives of the soul’s journey, the Garuda Purana also preserves practical guidance; here it records specific cleansing agents, reflecting an applied, ritual-and-health oriented dimension of dharma.
Use the verse as a traditional reference point: Triphala/haritaki and warm water are classic cleansing aids, but apply with discretion and appropriate medical guidance, especially if ill, elderly, pregnant, or on medication.
