It gives technical synonym-sets and classificatory labels used in Sanskrit phonetics/prosody (śikṣā/chandas), mapping certain names (e.g., vāgveṇī, trigata) onto specific consonant groupings (ka/ña/ṭa and kha).
Beyond theology and ritual, the Agni Purana catalogs specialized scholarly vocabularies—here, linguistic science—showing it functions as a compendium that preserves technical nomenclature alongside dharma, rites, and other disciplines.
While primarily technical, correct knowledge of sound-classification supports accurate recitation and textual transmission; in the Purāṇic view, precision in sacred speech contributes to ritual efficacy and the merit of proper study (svādhyāya).
