Sanskrit recitationPaingala Upanishad 15

jāgrat-svapna-suṣupti-mūrcchā-avasthānām anyā brahmādi-stamba-paryantaṃ sarva-jīva-bhaya-pradā sthūla-deha-visarjanī maraṇa-avasthā bhavati ||15||

Distinct from the states of waking, dream, deep sleep, and fainting is the state of death: from Brahmā down to a clump of grass, it bestows fear upon all beings and entails the casting off of the gross body.

Maraṇa (death) as a distinct avasthā; deha-tyāga (abandonment of gross body); universality of bhaya within saṃsāraMahavakya: Supports the soteriological thrust behind ‘ahaṃ brahmāsmi’/‘tat tvam asi’ by implying that fear (including fear of death) belongs to identification with body; realization of Brahman is classically linked with abhaya (fearlessness), though not a direct mahāvākya statement.AtharvaChandas: Prose
