śākalya uvāca | asya pāpasya śātyarthamupāyaṃ pravadāmi te
Śākalya
Listener: Kāśyapa
Scene: Śākalya raises his hand in teaching gesture, announcing he will state the means to pacify the sin; Kāśyapa listens attentively.
Sin is addressed through prescribed dharmic means; revelation of a proper remedy is itself an act of grace.
The tīrtha is introduced immediately after; this verse is the preface to that instruction.
A remedy (upāya) for pāpa-śānti is promised; details follow in subsequent verses.
