Tattva Level: pashu

Shiva Form: Dakṣiṇāmūrti

Sthala Purana: Not a Jyotirliṅga narrative; it extols guru-śuśrūṣā (service to the teacher) as a direct purifier of the paśu, and dāna of musical instruments as a merit that returns joy and auspiciousness.

Significance: Affirms the Śaiva Siddhānta centrality of guru-bhakti: service to guru supports eligibility for dīkṣā/jñāna; music-dāna supports mantra/veda recitation culture in temples and maṭhas.

Role: teaching

FAQs

The verse praises two dharmic acts—guru-sevā and dāna—as sources of inner repose and auspicious outcomes, indicating that devotion expressed through service and charitable support purifies the pashu (bound soul) and makes life’s journey peaceful.

In the Shiva Purana, Saguna Shiva worship is sustained by right conduct: honoring the guru who transmits Shiva-bhakti and supporting Vedic/temple culture through gifts to brāhmaṇas; such acts become ancillary limbs (aṅgas) that strengthen one’s devotion to Shiva and Linga-upāsanā.

A practical takeaway is to combine Shiva-japa (e.g., Panchakshara) with guru-sevā and periodic charity (dāna), especially offerings that support sacred recitation and worship; this complements Shaiva practice even when no specific bhasma/rudraksha instruction is stated in the verse.
