Account of the Pippalāda Avatāra
पिप्पलस्य शर्वपितुर्विलसन्तं सुतं च तम् । संस्कृत्य विधिवत्सर्वे विष्ण्वाद्यास्तुष्टुवुः पुनः
pippalasya śarvapiturvilasantaṃ sutaṃ ca tam | saṃskṛtya vidhivatsarve viṣṇvādyāstuṣṭuvuḥ punaḥ
Suta Goswami
Tattva Level: pati
Shiva Form: Rudra
Sthala Purana: Not a Jyotirliṅga episode; the verse depicts devas performing saṃskāra/saṃskṛti rites for Pippalāda (a Rudra-manifestation), then offering stuti—typical Purāṇic framing of divine recognition of Śiva’s supremacy.
Significance: Models the devotional pattern: consecration (saṃskāra) followed by stuti, implying that right-ordered ritual culminates in praise and grace.
Type: stotra
Offering: pushpa
It emphasizes that even the highest devas honor Shiva’s manifestation through proper consecration and praise—showing that liberation-oriented devotion (bhakti) is grounded in reverent vidhi and recognition of Shiva as the supreme Pati.
The act of विधिवत् संस्कृत्य (duly consecrating) mirrors the Shaiva approach to Saguna worship—establishing sanctity through prescribed rites and then offering stuti, as one would after Linga-pratiṣṭhā or ritual honoring of a divine form.
Follow scriptural procedure (vidhi) in worship—purification, offering, and hymns—supported by steady japa such as the Panchakshara (Om Namah Shivaya) while maintaining devotional reverence toward Shiva’s manifested form.
