yathā vitṛṣitāḥ syāma pītvā peyaṃ mudā vayam | tṛṣitāstu tathānyepi na viśeṣo'lpakodhikaḥ
Sūta Gosvāmin (narrating the Yuddhakhaṇḍa episode to the sages of Naimiṣāraṇya)
Tattva Level: pashu
Shiva Form: Dakṣiṇāmūrti
Significance: Cultivates samatā and compassion: recognizing shared thirst/need undermines pride and supports dharmic conduct on pilgrimage and in community.
Role: teaching
It uses “thirst” as a metaphor for craving: all embodied beings share the same basic longing, so pride in being “more” or “less” is hollow; Shaiva practice aims to replace craving with inner fullness through devotion and discipline.
The verse points to the common condition of beings bound by desire; Linga-worship of Saguna Shiva is presented in the Purana as the accessible means to purify that desire and turn the mind toward Pati (Shiva), the giver of true contentment.
Cultivate restraint and contentment alongside daily Shiva-upasana—japa of the Pañcākṣarī “Om Namaḥ Śivāya” and steady meditation on Shiva as the inner refuge that quenches the ‘thirst’ of the senses.
