Tattva Level: pasha
Shiva Form: Vīrabhadra
Sthala Purana: Not a Jyotirliṅga episode; the verse belongs to the Yuddhakhaṇḍa narrative of a daitya/dānava’s overpowering tejas causing the devas’ flight, setting the stage for Śiva’s restoring intervention later in the arc.
It highlights that mere celestial status (deva-hood) is not the highest refuge; when confronted by overwhelming divine tejas, pride and limited power collapse, and true safety lies in humility, surrender, and alignment with Shiva’s supreme order (Pati).
The verse portrays tejas as a manifest, perceivable power—an aspect of Saguna divinity. Linga-worship trains the devotee to approach that same supreme presence with reverence and steadiness, rather than with the deva-like assumption of control.
Cultivate endurance and surrender through japa of the Panchakshara (“Om Namaḥ Śivāya”) and disciplined worship (arcana) with Tripuṇḍra-bhasma; these stabilize the mind before intense inner tejas arising in devotion and meditation.
