Vishnu
Tattva Level: pati
Shiva Form: Liṅgodbhava
Sthala Purana: This is the liṅga-stambha (pillar of fire) test: Viṣṇu resolves to descend to find the base, while Brahmā ascends to find the top—both fail, establishing Śiva’s ananta-svarūpa and the futility of egoic measurement.
Significance: The liṅga-stambha episode is paradigmatic for liṅga-darśana: surrender replaces rivalry; humility becomes the gateway to Śiva’s anugraha.
Cosmic Event: theophany of an infinite fiery pillar (jyoti-stambha)
The verse highlights the soul’s (and even the gods’) limitation before Shiva’s infinite reality: the “pillar of fire” symbolizes the boundless Supreme (Pati) that cannot be measured by ordinary power, urging humility and surrender.
The fiery pillar is the archetype of the Jyotirlinga—Shiva revealing Himself as infinite Light. Linga-worship trains the devotee to approach Shiva beyond form (Nirguṇa) while still receiving grace through a sacred form (Saguṇa).
Contemplate the Jyotirlinga as endless light while repeating the Pañcākṣarī mantra “Om Namaḥ Śivāya,” cultivating humility (vinaya) and devotion (bhakti) rather than trying to “measure” the Divine by egoic effort.
