Description of the Viṣṇu–Brahmā Dispute and Brahmā’s Confusion
tadā prabhṛti māmāhurhaṃsahaṃso virāḍiti | haṃsahaṃseti yo brūyātsa haṃso'tha bhaviṣyati
Brahma (in the Sṛṣṭikhaṇḍa creation narration, as conveyed within Sūta’s discourse)
Tattva Level: pashu
Shiva Form: Dakṣiṇāmūrti
Mantra:
Type: stotra
Role: teaching
It teaches that a sacred epithet connected with the cosmic principle (Virāṭ) and the pure liberated state (Haṃsa) is not mere praise: when uttered with understanding and devotion, it refines the seeker’s consciousness toward the Haṃsa-like freedom that culminates in Śiva’s grace and liberation.
“Virāṭ” points to the all-pervading Saguna manifestation that devotees can contemplate, while “Haṃsa” points to inner realization. Linga-worship unites both—outer symbol and inner meaning—leading from form-based devotion to purified awareness oriented to Śiva.
Mantra-japa with contemplative repetition of “Haṃsa-Haṃsa” (linked to the natural breath awareness of haṃ-sa) as a meditative aid, alongside Shaiva daily worship such as Linga-pūjā and remembrance of Śiva for inner purification.
