Concise Teaching on Liṅga Worship / Śiva-arcana-vidhi
दारिद्र्यं रोगदुःखं च पीडनं शत्रुसंभवम् । पापं चतुर्विधं तावद्यावन्नार्चयते शिवम्
dāridryaṃ rogaduḥkhaṃ ca pīḍanaṃ śatrusaṃbhavam | pāpaṃ caturvidhaṃ tāvadyāvannārcayate śivam
Sūta Gosvāmī (narrating the teaching of the Rudra Saṃhitā to the sages at Naimiṣāraṇya)
Tattva Level: pashu
Shiva Form: Mahādeva
Significance: Establishes the general Purāṇic principle that neglect of Śiva-arcana leaves the paśu exposed to duḥkha and pāpa; worship is presented as the remedial means.
Type: stotra
The verse frames worldly suffering (poverty, disease, affliction, and enemy-born troubles) as karmic pāpa that continues until Śiva-arcana begins; in a Shaiva Siddhanta sense, worship opens the devotee to Śiva’s anugraha (grace), which burns karmic bonds and redirects life toward dharma and liberation.
Śiva is approached here as Saguna—worshipable through pūjā and especially the Śiva-liṅga—because liṅga-arcana is the accessible form of devotion that purifies pāpa and pacifies obstacles, gradually leading the devotee toward realization of Śiva’s higher, nirguṇa nature.
Perform Śiva-pūjā (liṅga-arcana) with japa of the Pañcākṣarī “Om Namaḥ Śivāya,” ideally with vibhūti (tripuṇḍra) and rudrākṣa as supports for purity and steadiness, making devotion the daily antidote to these four afflictions.
