Viṣṇu’s Hymn and the Petition for Śiva–Satī’s Protection
viṣṇuruvāca | devadeva mahādeva karuṇāsāgara prabho | tvaṃ pitā jagatāṃ tāta satī mātākhilasya ca
Vishnu
Tattva Level: pati
Shiva Form: Mahādeva
Significance: Affirms Śiva as jagat-pitā and Satī as jagan-mātā—devotees read this as a doctrinal warrant for approaching Śiva-Śakti as the sustaining parents of the cosmos.
Type: stotra
Shakti Form: Satī
Role: nurturing
Offering: dhupa
The verse establishes Shiva as the supreme compassionate Lord (Pati) and affirms the divine couple’s cosmic parenthood—Shiva as Father and Satī as Mother—supporting Shaiva Siddhanta’s devotional vision of grace guiding beings toward liberation.
By praising Mahādeva as a personal, compassionate Lord, the verse aligns with Saguna Shiva worship—approaching Shiva through reverence, prayer, and symbols such as the Shiva Linga, which embodies the accessible presence of the transcendent.
A practical takeaway is bhakti-filled japa and salutation to Shiva as “Mahādeva” and “Karuṇāsāgara,” ideally with Panchakshara mantra remembrance (Om Namaḥ Śivāya) and a devotional attitude of seeking grace.
