The Devas
Tattva Level: pasha
Shiva Form: Mahadeva
Sthala Purana: The devas explicitly attribute the perplexing event to Śiva’s duratyayā māyā—framing the episode as a divine concealment that precipitates supplication and eventual grace, rather than a local Jyotirliṅga legend.
Significance: Teaches that bewildering conditions are often tirodhāna (concealment) leading the soul to surrender; pilgrims interpret adversity as a call to seek Śiva’s refuge.
Mantra: devadeva mahādeva girijeśa mahāprabho | kiṃ jātamadhunā nātha tava māyā duratyayā
Type: stotra
Shakti Form: Pārvatī
Role: teaching
It highlights that even the Devas recognize Śiva’s māyā as “duratyayā,” implying liberation comes not by mere power or status but by Śiva’s grace and right understanding of Pati (Śiva) beyond the veiling power.
By addressing Śiva as Devadeva and Mahādeva, the verse models devotional surrender to Saguna Śiva; such reverent approach is the inner attitude behind Liṅga-pūjā—seeking the Lord who stands above māyā and reveals Himself to the devotee.
A practical takeaway is humble śaraṇāgati (taking refuge) with japa of the Pañcākṣarī “Om Namaḥ Śivāya,” praying to Mahādeva to help one cross māyā; this aligns with regular worship such as offering water to the Liṅga and steady mantra-recitation.
