Rāvaṇa’s Austerity and Śiva’s Bestowal of Grace
mahādeva uvāca | re re rāvaṇa durbhakta mā garvaṃ vaha durmate | śīghraṃ ca tava hastānāṃ darpaghnaśca bhavediha
Lord Shiva (Mahadeva)
Tattva Level: pati
Shiva Form: Mahādeva
Type: stotra
It teaches that mere power or outward devotion is not bhakti; ego (darpa/garva) blocks grace. Shiva, as the compassionate Pati, breaks pride so the soul can return to humility and right understanding.
Saguna Shiva directly intervenes in the devotee’s life to correct adharma and arrogance. Linga-worship is meant to cultivate surrender and inner purity; this rebuke shows that pride is contrary to true Linga-bhakti.
A practical takeaway is daily japa of the Panchakshara (Om Namaḥ Śivāya) with humility, combined with Tripuṇḍra (bhasma) and Rudrāksha as reminders to restrain ego and dedicate one’s strength to dharma.
