Maricha’s Mimic Cry and the Rama–Lakshmana–Sita Confrontation
प्रचोद्यमानेन मया गच्छेति बहुशस्तया।प्रत्युक्ता मैथिली वाक्यमिदं त्वत्प्रत्ययान्वितम्।।।
pracodyamānena mayā gaccheti bahuśas tayā |
pratyuktā maithilī vākyam idaṃ tvatpratyayānvitam ||
เมื่อเธอเร่งเร้าข้าซ้ำแล้วซ้ำเล่าว่า “ไปเถิด!” ข้าจึงตอบไมถิลีด้วยถ้อยคำนี้ เพื่อให้ความเชื่อมั่นในตัวเจ้ามั่นคงยิ่งขึ้น
When I was repeated asked to go, I said this in order to instil confidence in the princess from Mithila :
Dharma here is expressed as responsible speech: Lakṣmaṇa frames his reply to stabilize Sītā’s mind and uphold confidence in Rāma, showing that truthful, calming counsel is part of righteous conduct in crisis.
Sītā insists that Lakṣmaṇa leave to help Rāma; Lakṣmaṇa, under pressure, responds with words designed to reassure her about Rāma’s safety and capability.
Lakṣmaṇa’s prudence and loyalty—he speaks with the aim of preserving faith in Rāma while navigating a difficult duty-conflict.
