Winter Description and Reflection on Bharata’s Devotion
bhartā daśaratho yasyāḥ sādhuś ca bharatas sutaḥ | kathaṃ nu sā ’mbā kaikeyī tādṛśī krūraśīlinī ||
How could mother Kaikeyi, who has a husband like Dasaratha and a noble son like Bharata, be so wicked by nature ?
The verse raises the ethical problem of moral deviation within family lines, preparing the ground for Rāma’s dharma of guarding speech and honoring one’s mother.
In praising Bharata, Lakṣmaṇa turns to criticize Kaikeyī, questioning how such cruelty arose in a household with Daśaratha and Bharata.
Lakṣmaṇa’s protective love for Rāma (though it spills into harsh judgment), highlighting his intense loyalty and sense of injustice.
