Mārkaṇḍeya

Concept: Kīrtana increases puṇya; śravaṇa destroys pāpa—making life and lineage spiritually fruitful.

Application: Daily recite and listen to Hari-kathā or tīrtha-mahātmya; keep a short routine of nāma-japa and reading aloud to family, framing it as ‘kulatāraṇa’ (uplift of the lineage) through shared devotion.

Primary Rasa: shanta

Secondary Rasa: adbhuta

FAQs

The verse highlights kīrtana (devotional glorification/chanting) as increasing merit (puṇya) and śravaṇa (hearing sacred teachings) as destroying sins (pāpa).

It implies that a person’s life gains true purpose and that their family line benefits spiritually—being ‘carried across’ from negative karmic outcomes—through contact with devotion and sacred hearing.

The verse teaches that sincere devotional expression and attentive listening to sacred teachings transform one’s life: they cultivate virtue, reduce wrongdoing’s effects, and uplift not only the individual but also their wider community and family.
