Concept: Willful neglect of rightful worship (here, Candra as cosmic sustainer) causes loss of lifespan and descent into suffering states; moha is the root fault.

Application: Counter moha with daily remembrance and humility; keep small, consistent acts of reverence and gratitude to prevent spiritual negligence.

Secondary Rasa: raudra

Visual Art Cues: {"scene_description":"A stark contrast scene: on one side, the Moon’s cool blessing; on the other, a deluded man turns away, his shadow lengthening as a withered tree and a dimming life-lamp symbolize shrinking lifespan. In the background, a distant, smoky naraka gate looms—more allegorical than gruesome—emphasizing consequence rather than spectacle.","primary_figures":["Candra (distant, radiant)","Neglectful man (mānava-adhama)","Yama’s emissary (subtle silhouette)"],"setting":"Twilight crossroads: a small shrine ignored; a barren path leading toward a dark, smoky horizon.","lighting_mood":"dramatic","color_palette":["ashen gray","smoke black","cold silver","rust red","dull ochre"],"tanjore_prompt":"Tanjore painting style: moral allegory with a radiant Moon-deity in gold-leaf halo at one side and a man turning away at the other; symbolic life-lamp dimming, with a distant stylized naraka arch; rich reds and blacks, heavy gold accents on the divine side, sharp compositional contrast.","pahari_prompt":"Pahari miniature style: twilight landscape with subtle symbolism—withered tree, fading lamp, long shadow; Moon serene above; distant dark gateway hinted with minimal horror; delicate brushwork, restrained palette, psychological emphasis.","kerala_mural_prompt":"Kerala mural style: bold outlines, expressive eyes; the man in moha shown with averted face; Yama-dūta as patterned silhouette; Moon disc bright with rhythmic rays; strong red/black/yellow contrasts, temple-wall didactic panel feel.","pichwai_prompt":"Pichwai cloth painting style: allegorical panel with ornate border; Moon medallion bright, while the lower register shows a devotee turning away and abundance motifs fading into thorny vines; deep indigo and black with silver-white highlights, symbolic rather than violent."}

Audio Atmosphere: {"recitation_mood":"dramatic","suggested_raga":"Bhairavi","pace":"fast-dramatic","voice_tone":"authoritative","sound_elements":["single bell strike","low drum","wind hush","conch (distant)","brief silence after warning"]}

Sandhi Resolution Notes: मोहात्सुधांशुं = मोहात् + सुधांशुम्; मानवाधमः = मानव + अधमः; आयुस्तस्य = आयुः + तस्य; चाधिगच्छति = च + अधिगच्छति.

Sudhāṃśu (Moon)

FAQs

Sudhāṃśu is an epithet of the Moon (Chandra), meaning “the one whose rays are like nectar.”

It frames worship (pūjā) as a decisive religious duty: neglecting reverence due to moha (delusion) is presented as spiritually harmful and karmically consequential.

The verse teaches accountability: willful neglect of sacred duties out of delusion leads to decline (loss of vitality/āyuḥ) and adverse afterlife consequences (naraka).
