Concept: From subtle principles arise aggregates and their specific guṇas; smell is linked with the grossification culminating in earth, while indriyas are ‘taijasa’ and their presiding deities arise from the sāttvika (vaikārika) aspect.

Application: Cultivate discrimination: recognize sensory experience as a constructed evolute; use smell/taste/other sense-objects as reminders to return attention to the indwelling Lord rather than being dragged outward.

Primary Rasa: adbhuta

Secondary Rasa: shanta

Visual Art Cues: {"scene_description":"A vast, dark-blue cosmic expanse where a subtle luminous principle condenses into a swirling ‘aggregate’ like a nebula. From it, a golden-brown earth-sphere manifests with a visible fragrance-wave motif, while ten small guardian deities appear as radiant sparks around emerging sense-faculties.","primary_figures":["Abstract Prakṛti (as cosmic matrix)","Ten presiding deities of the senses (symbolic)","Emerging tanmātra of gandha (smell)"],"setting":"Primordial cosmos, before formed worlds; concentric mandala-like layers of subtle elements.","lighting_mood":"divine radiance","color_palette":["midnight indigo","golden amber","earth ochre","smoke gray","pearl white"],"tanjore_prompt":"Tanjore painting style: cosmic mandala of creation with a central luminous prakṛti-egg (brahmāṇḍa) cracking into layers; stylized earth element emerging with gandha symbolized by curling floral incense lines; ten tiny devatā figures in jeweled crowns orbiting the indriya-lotus, heavy gold leaf halos, rich vermilion and emerald borders, gem-studded ornaments, traditional South Indian iconographic symmetry.","pahari_prompt":"Pahari miniature style: delicate depiction of a night-sky void with soft gradients; a translucent cosmic egg opens into five elemental bands, the earth band painted in warm ochres with faint floral fragrance curls; ten small luminous deities hover like fireflies, refined faces, lyrical minimalism, cool blues and gentle whites, fine brushwork and airy space.","kerala_mural_prompt":"Kerala mural style: bold black outlines forming a circular cosmogram; prakṛti as a central lotus-egg, earth element in ochre-green with stylized fragrance spirals; ten devatās with large expressive eyes and ornate headgear arranged in a ring, flat temple-wall composition using natural pigments (red, yellow, green) and strong symmetry.","pichwai_prompt":"Pichwai cloth painting style: ornate circular creation-mandala framed by lotus borders; fragrance shown as floral vines rising from an earth-toned lotus; ten guardian figures placed like petals around a central indriya-lotus, intricate white-on-indigo detailing, gold highlights, peacock-feather motifs in the border, Nathdwara-inspired decorative density."}

FAQs

It reflects the classical element-theory where the earth element (pṛthvī) is characterized by the tanmātra/quality of smell (gandha), marking the culmination of gross element formation.

In Sāṅkhya-influenced Purāṇic cosmology, the operative power of the senses is described as taijasa (energetic/fiery), indicating their active, functioning aspect.

They are the ten presiding deities associated with the ten senses (five jñānendriyas and five karmendriyas), said to arise from the vaikārika (sāttvika) aspect of ahaṅkāra in the standard tattva schema.
