Viṣṇu (narrative transition; also contains a preceding line about a 'dharmātmā' speaker)

Concept: True knowledge is received through a dharmātmā guide; hearing (śravaṇa) from the right source prepares one for divine instruction.

Application: Seek counsel from ethically grounded teachers; prioritize listening with faith and discernment before acting.

Primary Rasa: shanta

Secondary Rasa: adbhuta

Visual Art Cues: {"scene_description":"A dignified sage named Sārasa finishes speaking, his hand lowered as if concluding a teaching, while Viṣṇu—radiant and composed—acknowledges the discourse. The scene feels like a relay of wisdom: words becoming a living current passing from mouth to heart.","primary_figures":["Sārasa (sage)","Viṣṇu","attendant listeners (brāhmaṇa/seeker)"],"setting":"assembly space in a hermitage with a low dais, palm-leaf manuscripts, and a small sacred fire","lighting_mood":"temple lamp-lit","color_palette":["warm amber","deep indigo","copper brown","leaf green","pearl white"],"tanjore_prompt":"Tanjore painting style: Viṣṇu with gold leaf halo seated beside a sage Sārasa holding a manuscript; ornate arch and lamp flames rendered with embossed gold; listeners in respectful rows, rich reds and greens, traditional iconographic symmetry.","pahari_prompt":"Pahari miniature style: a quiet satsang scene with delicate linework; Sārasa speaking softly, Viṣṇu serene; cool palette with warm lamp glow, refined faces, subtle manuscript details and patterned rugs.","kerala_mural_prompt":"Kerala mural style: strong outlines, stylized seated figures; Viṣṇu central with characteristic eyes, Sārasa to the side with a palm-leaf text; warm reds/yellows/greens, mural-like flat background with decorative motifs.","pichwai_prompt":"Pichwai cloth painting style: devotional assembly framed by lotus borders; Viṣṇu central, sage and listeners below; deep blue background with gold highlights, intricate floral patterns and small shankha-chakra motifs."}

Audio Atmosphere: {"recitation_mood":"narrative","suggested_raga":"Desh","pace":"moderate-narrative","voice_tone":"serene","sound_elements":["soft conch in distance","low murmur of an assembly","crackling lamp wicks","brief silence at speaker change"]}

Sandhi Resolution Notes: तवैव = तव + एव; विष्णुरुवाच = विष्णुः + उवाच; तत्सर्वम् = तत् + सर्वम्; एवमाकर्ण्य = एवम् + आकर्ण्य।

FAQs

The verse explicitly marks “Viṣṇu said” (viṣṇur uvāca) and functions as a narrative hinge: it indicates that Viṣṇu has heard Sārasa’s words and sets up what follows.

“Dharmātmā” highlights that true instruction is expected to come from a person grounded in dharma—suggesting that moral integrity is a prerequisite for trustworthy guidance.

It frames knowledge as something received through attentive listening (ākarṇya) from an authorized speaker, reinforcing the Purāṇic model of learning through lineage, dialogue, and careful hearing.
