Anūcāna (True Learning), the Vedāṅgas, and Śikṣā: Svara, Sāmavedic Chant, and Gandharva Theory
सनंदन उवाच । श्रृणु नारद वक्ष्यामि ह्यनूचानस्य लक्षणम् । यज्ज्ञात्वा सांगवेदानामभिज्ञो जायते नरः ॥ ९ ॥
sanaṃdana uvāca | śrṛṇu nārada vakṣyāmi hyanūcānasya lakṣaṇam | yajjñātvā sāṃgavedānāmabhijño jāyate naraḥ || 9 ||
สนันทนะกล่าวว่า “จงฟังเถิด นารท เราจักกล่าวลักษณะของอนูจานะ ผู้สวดและศึกษาพระเวทอย่างแท้จริง เมื่อรู้สิ่งนี้แล้ว บุคคลย่อมเป็นผู้รู้พระเวทพร้อมเวทางคะโดยแท้”
Sanandana
Vrata: none
Primary Rasa: shanta
Secondary Rasa: bhakti
It sets the standard for authentic sacred learning: true Vedic knowledge is not mere memorization, but disciplined study that culminates in clear discernment—supporting moksha-oriented dharma.
By defining genuine scriptural competence, it prepares the ground for right understanding of dharma and devotion; bhakti becomes steady when rooted in correct knowledge of the Vedas and their intended meaning.
The verse explicitly points to mastery of the Vedas together with Vedāṅgas—such as Śikṣā (phonetics), Vyākaraṇa (grammar), Chandas (meter), Nirukta (etymology), Kalpa (ritual procedure), and Jyotiṣa (Vedic astrology/timekeeping).
