Adhyāya 14: Sudēṣṇā Sends Sairandhrī to Kīcaka’s House (सुदेष्णा–सैरन्ध्री–कीचक संवादः)
स तु कामाग्निसंतप्त: सुदेष्णामभिगम्य वै । प्रहसन्निव सेनानीरिदं वचनमबत्रवीत्,कामवासनाकी आगमें जलता हुआ सेनापति कीचक अपनी बहिन रानी सुदेष्णाके पास गया और हँसता हुआ-सा उससे इस प्रकार बोला--
sa tu kāmāgnisaṁtaptaḥ sudeṣṇām abhigamya vai | prahasan iva senānīr idaṁ vacanam abravīt ||
กีจกะผู้ถูกไฟแห่งกามเผาผลาญ ได้เข้าไปหาเทวีสุเทษณา แล้วกล่าวถ้อยคำนี้ด้วยรอยยิ้มประหนึ่งปกปิดเจตนา
वैशम्पायन उवाच
Unrestrained kāma is portrayed as a burning fire that clouds discernment and leads to adharma; the verse signals how desire, when joined with authority, can become coercive and morally dangerous.
The narrator introduces Kīcaka approaching Queen Sudeṣṇā and beginning a conversation; his lust-driven state and performative smile set the tone for the ensuing attempt to use palace influence to pursue his desire.
