Educational Q&A

The verse highlights an ethical hierarchy of concern: one may endure personal suffering, yet feel deeper sorrow for the vulnerability and welfare of one’s parents—especially when they are weakened by loss and devotion. It underscores filial responsibility and compassionate attention to dependents.

Yama speaks to a woman addressed as “śubhe,” expressing that his lament is not centered on himself; rather, it is directed toward his father and his frail mother, who has followed her husband—indicating a context of bereavement and the mother’s diminished condition after her husband’s fate.
