duryodhanasya pāpasya nityāhaṃkāravādinaḥ | praveśo hāstinapure duṣkaraḥ pratibhāti me ||
Prideful, ego-driven speech and conduct (ahaṃkāra) are presented as ethical faults that obstruct one’s acceptance and success in society; wrongdoing (pāpa) combined with arrogance makes even basic aims—like gaining entry or welcome—seem unattainable.
King Janamejaya comments on Duryodhana’s character, judging him sinful and habitually arrogant, and therefore doubts that Duryodhana could easily gain entry into (or acceptance within) Hāstinapura in the situation being discussed.
