Kaurava Court Hears of the Pāṇḍavas’ Forest Hardship (वैचित्रवीर्यवंशीयस्य राज्ञः करुणाविचारः)

।। अहं सप्तर्षिपत्नीनां कृत्वा रूपाणि पावकम्‌,मैं अग्निके प्रति कामभावसे पीड़ित हूँ। अतः स्वयं ही सप्तर्षिपत्नियोंके रूप धारण करके अग्निदेवकी कामना करूँगी; क्योंकि वे उनके रूपसे मोहित हो रहे हैं। ऐसा करनेसे उन्हें प्रसन्नता होगी और मेरी कामना भी पूर्ण हो जायगी”

ahaṃ saptarṣipatnīnāṃ kṛtvā rūpāṇi pāvakam | agnike prati kāmabhāvena pīḍitāsmi | ataḥ svayam eva saptarṣipatnīnāṃ rūpāṇi dhṛtvā agnidevasya kāmanāṃ kariṣyāmi | yato hi sa tābhir rūpair mohyate | evaṃ kṛte sa prasannatāṃ yāsyati mama ca kāmanā paripūrṇā bhaviṣyati ||

มารกัณฑेयกล่าวว่า “เราถูกความใคร่ปรารถนาต่อพระอัคนีเผาผลาญอยู่ ดังนั้นเราจักแปลงกายเป็นรูปของภรรยาทั้งหลายแห่งฤๅษีทั้งเจ็ด แล้วเข้าหาพระอัคนี เพราะพระองค์หลงใหลในรูปเหล่านั้นอยู่แล้ว เมื่อทำเช่นนี้ พระองค์จักยินดี และความปรารถนาของเราก็จักสำเร็จ”
