Educational Q&A

The virtuous are characterized by freedom from desire and hatred; such people become a living standard (witness) of dharma for society. Their ethical discipline is presented as concise and principled—an ‘unsurpassed vow’ said to be expressible in three key steps.

In the Vyādha’s discourse on dharma (in Vana Parva), he describes the marks of true saintly conduct and introduces a compact formulation of the highest vow of the good, preparing to enumerate or explain those ‘three steps’ in the surrounding verses.
