Adhyāya 208: Aṅgirasī-kanyāḥ

Enumeration of Aṅgiras’ daughters and attribute-names

अश्रद्दधाना धर्मस्य ते नश्यन्ति न संशय: । महादृतिरिवाध्मात: पापो भवति नित्यदा,यह (दूसरोंका अहित करना) तो दुराचारीकी भाँति दुर्व्यसनोंमें आसक्त हुए पापी पुरुषोंका ही कार्य है। “धर्म कोई चीज नहीं है” ऐसा मानकर जो शुद्ध आचार-विचारवाले श्रेष्ठ पुरुषोंकी हँसी उड़ाते हैं, वे धर्मपर अश्रद्धा रखनेवाले मनुष्य निश्चय ही नष्ट हो जाते हैं। पापी मनुष्य लुहारकी बड़ी धौंकनीके समान सदा ऊपरसे फूले दिखायी देते हैं (परंतु वास्तवमें सारहीन होते हैं)

aśraddadhānā dharmasya te naśyanti na saṁśayaḥ | mahādṛtir ivādhmātaḥ pāpo bhavati nityadā |

ผู้ไร้ศรัทธาในธรรมะย่อมพินาศแน่นอน—ไม่ต้องสงสัย คนบาปเป็นดุจหีบลมของช่างเหล็กอันใหญ่โต: ภายนอกพองโต แต่ภายในว่างเปล่า

Educational Q&A

Faith in dharma and respect for noble conduct are presented as essential for inner worth and long-term well-being. Those who deny dharma, mock the virtuous, and harm others may appear impressive outwardly, but are hollow within and inevitably meet ruin.

In the Vyādha’s instruction (the hunter’s discourse on dharma), he warns against irreverence toward dharma and the virtuous. He uses a vivid simile—like an inflated blacksmith’s bellows—to describe the outwardly puffed-up yet inwardly empty nature of the sinful person.
