हि आन (9) आप आ आह - जैसे मनुष्य अपरिचित पुरुषका दिया हुआ अन्न नहीं खाता, उसी प्रकार अश्रोत्रियका दिया हुआ हविष्य देवता नहीं स्वीकार करते हैं। सप्ताशीरत्याधिकशततमो< ध्याय: वैवस्वत मनुका चरित्र तथा मत्स्यावतारकी कथा वैशम्पायन उवाच ततः स पाण्डवो विप्रं मार्कण्डेयमुवाच ह | कथयस्वेति चरितं मनोरवैंवस्वतस्य च,वैशम्पायनजी कहते हैं-जनमेजय! इसके बाद पाण्डुनन्दन युधिष्ठिरने मार्कण्डेयजीसे कहा--“अब आप हमसे वैवस्वत मनुके चरित्र कहिये'

vaiśampāyana uvāca | tataḥ sa pāṇḍavo vipraṃ mārkaṇḍeyam uvāca ha | kathayasveti caritaṃ manor vaivasvatasya ca ||

ไวศัมปายนะกล่าวว่า ครั้นแล้ว ยุธิษฐิระ ธรรมราชแห่งปาณฑพ ได้ทูลมุนีมารกัณฑेयว่า “ข้าแต่ภควัน โปรดเล่าเรื่องราวชีวิตและจริยาวัตรของไววัสวตมนูให้พวกข้าพเจ้าฟังเถิด”
