Educational Q&A

The verse frames ethical interest in exemplary kingship: true renown (viśruti) invites inquiry into origins and causes, suggesting that greatness is to be understood through lineage, conduct, and the dharmic circumstances of one’s birth and life.

Yudhiṣṭhira addresses a learned Brāhmaṇa-sage and asks how the famed king Mandhātṛ—known across the three worlds—was born as the son of King Yuvanāśva, introducing the forthcoming origin-legend and brief account of Mandhātṛ’s career.
