न त्वेव मन्ये पुरुषस्य कर्म संवर्तते सुप्रयुक्ते यथावत्‌ । मातुः पितु: कर्मणाभिप्रसूत: संवर्धते विधिवद्‌ भोजनेन

sañjaya uvāca | na tveva manye puruṣasya karma saṃvartate suprayukte yathāvat | mātuḥ pituḥ karmaṇābhiprasūtaḥ saṃvardhate vidhivad bhojanena |

สัญชัยกล่าวว่า “แต่ข้าพเจ้าไม่เห็นว่า ‘ความเพียรของมนุษย์’ แม้จะใช้ได้ดีและถูกต้องตามควร จะสุกงอมเป็นผลดังประสงค์ได้ด้วยตนเองล้วนๆ บุตรย่อมเกิดด้วยความพยายามของมารดาบิดา แต่จะเติบโตได้ก็ด้วยการเลี้ยงดูตามครรลอง—ด้วยอาหารและสิ่งเกื้อหนุนอื่นๆ ฉันใด ความพากเพียรของมนุษย์ก็ต้องอาศัยเงื่อนไขเกื้อกูลที่อยู่นอกอำนาจตน; ในเรื่องนี้ โชคชะตาเป็นผู้ชี้ขาด”
