Udyoga Parva — Gandhārī’s Counsel to Duryodhana
parābhaviṣyanty asurā daiteyā dānavaiḥ saha | ādityā vasavo rudrā bhaviṣyanti divaukasaḥ ||
The verse underscores that outcomes in great conflicts are not determined solely by force; a higher cosmic order (often voiced through divine pronouncement) governs victory and defeat, aligning ultimately with the side identified with the Devas.
Vaiśaṃpāyana recalls a declaration (attributed in the surrounding narrative to Brahmā) made when Devas and Asuras stood ready for battle: the Asuras along with the Daityas and Dānavas will be defeated, while the Ādityas, Vasus, and Rudras—the heavenly beings—will prevail.
