Yoga-kṛtya (योककृत्य) — Vyāsa on Sense-Restraint, Obstacles, and Brahman-Realization

manaḥ sṛṣṭiṁ vikurute codyamānaṁ sisṛkṣayā | ākāśaṁ jāyate tasmāt tasya śabdaṁ guṇaṁ viduḥ ||

Educational Q&A

Creation begins with an inner impulse: when mind is driven by the intention to create, manifestation proceeds, and the first subtle element identified here is ākāśa, whose distinctive property is śabda (sound).

In the didactic discourse of the Śānti Parva, Vyāsa explains a step in the cosmological sequence: the mind, moved by the urge to create, initiates differentiation, from which ākāśa arises, characterized by sound.
