Educational Q&A

The verse praises an ideal of dharmic character: purity and self-restraint, non-violent restraint from punitive force (nyasta-daṇḍa), and impartial goodwill toward all beings expressed consistently in thought, speech, and action.

Vaiśampāyana is describing a person’s virtues in the Shalya Parva context, highlighting moral and ascetic qualities—especially non-harming and equal regard for all creatures—before the narrative proceeds with the events of the war book.
