Resolve for the Mace Duel
दुर्योधन उवाच एकश्चेद् योद्धुमाक्रन्दे शूरोडद्य मम दीयताम्
duryodhana uvāca | ekaś ced yoddhum ākrande śūro 'dya mama dīyatām ||
ทุรโยธนะกล่าวว่า “หากในสนามที่กึกก้องด้วยเสียงศึกนี้มีวีรบุรุษสักคนที่จะรบ ก็จงมอบเขาให้แก่ข้าในวันนี้”
दुर्योधन उवाच
The verse highlights the warrior-ethos of seeking a champion and the ethical tension between valor and ego: Duryodhana frames the crisis as solvable by sheer heroism, revealing reliance on martial prowess and personal assertion rather than reflection on dharma or consequences.
In the Shalya Parva battle context, Duryodhana calls for a single brave fighter to step forward for combat, effectively demanding that a hero be assigned to him immediately to meet the pressing needs of the fight.
