संजय कहते हैं--राजन्! तदनन्तर भागे हुए कौरव, जिनकी सेना तितर-बितर हो गयी थी, धनुषसे छोड़ा हुआ बाण जहाँतक पहुँचता है, उतनी दूरीपर जाकर खड़े हो गये। वहींसे उन्होंने देखा कि अर्जुनका बड़े वेगसे बढ़ता हुआ अस्त्र चारों ओर बिजलीके समान चमक रहा है ।।
sañjaya uvāca—rājan! tadanantaraṃ bhāgāḥ kṛtāḥ kauravāḥ, yeṣāṃ senā titar-bitarābhavat, dhanuṣā chinnaḥ śaraḥ yāvat prāpnoti tāvat dūre gatvā tiṣṭhanti sma. tataḥ paśyanti sma yat pārthasya astram ativegena vardhamānaṃ sarvataḥ vidyut-sadṛśaṃ dīpyate. tad arjunāstraṃ grasati sama karṇo viyad-gataṃ ghorataraiḥ śaraiḥ tat; kruddhena pārthena bhṛśābhiṣūṣṭaṃ vadhāya karṇasya mahāvimarde.
สัญชัยกล่าวว่า—ข้าแต่พระราชา! ครั้นแล้วพวกเการพผู้พ่ายแพ้และแตกกระเจิงได้ถอยร่นไป และหยุดอยู่เพียงระยะที่ลูกศรจากคันธนูพุ่งไปถึง. จากที่นั้นพวกเขาเห็นอาวุธของอรชุนพุ่งทะยานด้วยความเร็วมหาศาล ส่องประกายรอบด้านดุจสายฟ้า. แล้วกรรณะซึ่งทัดเทียมกัน ได้ใช้ศรที่น่าสะพรึงยิ่งกว่ากลืนกลบอาวุธของอรชุนซึ่งแล่นไปในเวหา—อาวุธนั้นเองที่ปารถะผู้เดือดดาลได้ปล่อยอย่างรุนแรงในมหาศึก เพื่อหมายสังหารกรรณะ.
