Educational Q&A

Cruel speech, especially when used to shame someone publicly, is a grave ethical failure (adharma). The epic repeatedly treats such verbal violence as a seed of later suffering, showing that words can carry moral consequences comparable to physical acts.

Sañjaya, narrating events and their moral causes, alludes to Karṇa’s earlier harsh statement to Draupadī in the Kuru assembly. This recollection functions as a reminder of the prior injustices that underlie and intensify the present destruction of the war.
