Arjuna’s targeted advance; Śalya–Karṇa dialogue; interception attempts
द्रोणपुत्रं पराजित्य जित्वा चान्यान् महारथान् । अब्रवीदर्जुनो राजन् वासुदेवमिदं वच:,नरेश्वर! द्रोणपुत्र तथा अन्यान्य महारथियोंकों हताकर और उनपर विजय पाकर अर्जुनने भगवान् श्रीकृष्णसे इस प्रकार कहा--
droṇaputraṁ parājitya jitvā cānyān mahārathān | abravīd arjuno rājan vāsudevam idaṁ vacaḥ ||
ข้าแต่พระราชา ครั้นอรชุนปราบบุตรแห่งโทรณะและมีชัยเหนือมหารถีอื่น ๆ แล้ว จึงกราบทูลวาสุเทวะ (ศรีกฤษณะ) ด้วยถ้อยคำนี้
संजय उवाच
The verse itself teaches indirectly: even amid battlefield success, decisive action is followed by reflection and consultation. Arjuna turns to Kṛṣṇa, implying that power and victory should be guided by right counsel and dharmic discernment rather than mere triumph.
Sañjaya reports to King Dhṛtarāṣṭra that Arjuna has defeated Droṇa’s son (Aśvatthāmā) and other leading warriors, and that, after these victories, Arjuna begins to speak to Kṛṣṇa—introducing the next lines of dialogue.
