करोति कर्म यद्‌ वैश्यस्तद्‌ गत्वा हुपजीवति । कृषिगोरक्ष्यवाणिज्यमकुत्सा वैश्यकर्मणि,वैश्य जो कर्म करता है, उसका आश्रय लेकर सब लोग जीविका चलाते हैं। कृषि, गोरक्षा और वाणिज्य--ये वैश्यके अपने कर्म हैं। इससे उसको घृणा नहीं होनी चाहिये

karoti karma yad vaiśyas tad gatvā hy upajīvati | kṛṣigorakṣyavāṇijyam akutsā vaiśyakarmaṇi ||

ภีษมะกล่าวว่า “กิจใดที่ไวศยะกระทำ ชนทั้งหลายย่อมยังชีพโดยอาศัยกิจนั้นเอง. กสิกรรม การคุ้มครองโค และการค้า—ล้วนเป็นงานประจำของไวศยะ; เพราะฉะนั้นเขาไม่ควรดูหมิ่นหรืออับอายต่ออาชีพของตน.”
