देवदूतेन यः पृष्ट: श्राद्धस्य विधिनिश्चय: । गतिं त्रयाणां पिण्डानां शृणुष्वावहितो मम
devadūtena yaḥ pṛṣṭaḥ śrāddhasya vidhiniścayaḥ | gatiṃ trayāṇāṃ piṇḍānāṃ śṛṇuṣvāvahito mama ||
ทูตแห่งเทวะกล่าวว่า “ท่านได้ถามเราถึงข้อวินิจฉัยแห่งวิธีศราทธ์แล้ว บัดนี้จงฟังด้วยความตั้งใจ เมื่อเราจักกล่าวถึงคติของปิณฑะทั้งสาม”
देवदूत उवाच
That śrāddha is governed by a definite ritual order (vidhi-niścaya), and that the offerings—specifically the three piṇḍas—have distinct intended ‘destinations’ or effects; therefore one should learn and perform the rite with attentiveness and precision.
A divine messenger responds to a query about the correct procedure of śrāddha and introduces an explanation of what happens to the three piṇḍa offerings, asking the listener to pay close attention.
