तपसा महदाप्रोति विद्यया चेति न: श्रुतम्‌ । तपसैव चापनुदेद्‌ यच्चान्यदपि दुष्कृतम्‌,“मैंने सुना है कि तपस्या और विद्या दोनोंसे ही मनुष्य महान्‌ पदको प्राप्त करता है। अन्यान्य जो पाप हैं, उन्हें भी तपस्यासे ही वह दूर कर सकता है

bhīṣma uvāca | tapasā mahad āpnoti vidyayā ceti naḥ śrutam | tapasaiva cāpanuded yac cānyad api duṣkṛtam |

เราทั้งหลายได้ยินมาว่า มนุษย์ย่อมบรรลุฐานะอันยิ่งใหญ่ได้ด้วยตบะ และด้วยวิทยาความรู้ อีกทั้งความผิดบาปอื่นใดก็อาจขจัดได้ด้วยตบะนั้นเอง
