Ādi Parva, Adhyāya 90 — Pūror Vaṃśa, Kuru-Pravara, and the Janamejaya Line

Genealogical Recitation

sukhaṁ hi jantur yadi vāpi duḥkhaṁ daivādhīnaṁ vindate nātmaśaktyā | tasmād diṣṭaṁ balavan manyamāno na saṁjvarennāpi hṛṣyet kathaṁcit ||

Educational Q&A

The verse teaches equanimity: since experiences of pleasure and pain are said to arise under the sway of destiny (daiva/diṣṭa) rather than sheer personal power, one should avoid both excessive grief and excessive elation, maintaining steadiness of mind.

In the Adi Parva’s context around the serpent-related episodes, the speaker (here attributed to Jaratkāru) articulates a reflective, ethical counsel: interpret life’s ups and downs as governed by what is ordained, and respond with restraint rather than emotional extremes.
