Yayāti–Indra Dialogue and Aṣṭaka’s Inquiry

The verse highlights ethical accountability in relationships and kingship: when authority acts in a way that violates respect and agreed norms, the injured party may refuse complicity. Devayānī’s decision to leave functions as a moral boundary against conduct she deems improper.
After hearing Śarmiṣṭhā’s statement, Devayānī addresses King Yayāti directly, declaring she will not stay there anymore because he has done something highly displeasing to her—signaling an escalation in the Devayānī–Śarmiṣṭhā–Yayāti conflict.
